Jomox Bassdrum and Percussion Eurorack Modules Announced

JoMoX ModBase 09 Bass Drum Module
Last weekend Jomox announced that their first set of Eurorack drum modules are shipping...

The ModBase 09 Bassdrum module is an impressive looking module with many knobs and buttons and plenty of CV modulation options.
They also have MIDI Inputs, what makes them even cooler...

" For regular modular use, analog routable CV inputs and an analog output are accessible via 3.5mm jacks. The Gate can be configured as 0-5V (0-15V is accepted too), inversed or s-trigger.

Everything is storeable and can be recalled via encoder klick from 100 presets. But for the analog feel of modular, eight potentiometers give you the fine and precise editing of the most important parameters without stepping through menus.

E-Drummers can create complete E-drum setups, because there is an internal Jomox analog connection bus with a fast digital link which can do a submix and an FX send mix from each module hooked up to the bus.
With this system bus you won't need to use the audio outputs but instead you have a programmable bus system that can link to future master, sequencer and mixing or effects modules - which can take control over the single modules.
This makes the whole modular setup recallable and storeable from a center module like a drum machine.

Also, to link the ModBase modules to our other products, they all have a Midi interface on the rear that can be wired within the rack case and being cascaded from one module to another.
The menu selection is paged by two-colored LEDs for both sides of the menu.
Two internal LFOs which both control the tuning of the kick drum VCO expand the sound spectrum once more.

All analog parameters are either storeable and controllable via Midi. The Midi notes control the pitch of the kick drum VCO.
The modules are controllable via CV/Gate and via trigger pads for live drummers. With the trigger input, the threshold and velocity dependend dynamics can be adjusted.
Four routable CV inputs let all internal sound parameters (incl. LFOs and metallic noise) be controlled by CV sequencers. Every CV input provides an own programmable amount which can be negative too (i.e. subtracting the CV value from the internal value). The range goes from 0..5V."

JoMoX Mod.Brane 11 Percussion Module
The ModBrane 11 Percussion Module is dedicated to all kind of sounds from classic snare to insane metallic pickaxe sound.

" In the Mod.Brane 11 there are two 2-pole filters (F-OSCs) arranged in a way that dampen is like a limited range of resonance. They can interact between each other by two coupling parameters 1_2 coupling and 2_1 coupling. Coupling is a combination of addition (mixing) and frequency modulation. 2_1 coupling acts inversely with negative values and even with positive values. So every possible feedback and interference mode can be produced.

A dual noise generator which provides either white noise or a multitone metallic noise or a mixing of both, combined with a decay envelope, can produce percussion-like and cymbal-like tones which are mixed to the rest of the membrane signal. A part of the signal excites the F-OSCs, and the other part is mixed as a noise envelope to the signal.

Two internal LFOs which control the tuning of both F-OSCs expand the sound spectrum once more."

Video: JoMox goes modular ! Expect fat sounds

" JoMox was at Modularsquare november 30 to show his new eurorack modules dedicated to drums !
On the left side of this case you will find 2x ModBase 09 Bass Drum modules obviously dedicated to kick drum, and on the right side, 2x Mod.Brane 11 percussion module dedicated to all kind of sounds from classic snare to insane metallic pickaxe sound.
We are totally in love.
Nothing fancy in that video, just exploring presets to find good combinations. We will come back later with deeper videos.
(All these modules are controlled by a Doepfer A-155 sequencer, no FX nor compression added)"

Critter & Guitari Melody Mill Eurorack Note Generation Module

Critter & Guitari announced their first Eurorack module, the Melody Mill today.

" The Critter & Guitari Melody Mill is a note generation module for Eurorack modular synthesizers.
It contains a keyboard, CV outputs, CV clock input, built-in arpeggiators, a sequencer, and MIDI capabilities.

Critter & Guitari Melody Mill
With the Melody Mill you can:
- Use the CV output to control oscillators
- Connect your MIDI controller or computer into your modular setup using the MIDI input
- Play notes, record and playback sequences and arpeggios on your favorite modules
- Convert MIDI clock into CV pulses
- Clock the arpeggiator with an LFO for strange melodies
- 'Hold' notes for drones
- Connect the built-in square wave oscillator directly to a filter or an amp

The Melody Mill generates 1-Volt per octave, trigger, and gate control voltages.
These signals are used to trigger other synthesizer modules.
Notes may be played on the built-in keyboard or received via MIDI.
The notes may be used directly to generate the CV signals, or fed through one of the five arpeggiator modes first.
Adding to the fun is a hold button and a simple sequencer to record and playback notes.
In addition to the CV outputs, the Melody Mill also outputs MIDI of the note it is generating.

A ‘smart’ arpeggiator clock selects a clock source depending on what is connected to the Melody Mill: CV clock input, MIDI clock, or internal clock (controlled by the 'Rate' knob)."

I really like the idea of such a module and also the wooden look of the buttons. i hope we'll see some videos of it soon...
The module is shipping now and can be yours for 360 USD

Random Video: Cardio Bass & Respiration Synth by Ukrets

Mark Mennings (@sensien) brought this next video to my attention.
A nice example of biorythmic/posture control of a doepfer modular.

Video: Cardio Bass & Respiration Synth

" Ukrets uses the ephysm.us biomusic performance and authoring platform. Performed by the Holminid with synthesis by Sensien, using a modular analogue synth. Everything is generated from live biosignals and postures, except the obligatory 808 kick that was added for structural support. The track consists of two patches recorded in succession, mixed without any further editing or processing. Jaala, Finland, July 2013. http://ephysm.us"
" ...we convert the signals from the wireless sensor belt to OSC, which is then used to create triggers and control ableton. This is converted to CV."

2Egress Studio Furniture and Cases

After the recent wave of interesting new Eurorack-modules you might run out of rack-space pretty soon...
I recently stumbled upon a Canadian firm that builds and designs studio furniture and Eurorack cases.

A few of the 2Egress Eurorack case-designs
2Egress is a three year old small business located in Toronto, Canada that specializes in technical furniture for recording studios and film editing suites.

"Growing up with an avid woodworking father, Brock inherited a love for all things wooden, and developed a passion for restoring classic racing sailboats.
These experiences have been stepping stones to the high quality, detail oriented pieces that he designs and builds today.

As a schooled audio engineer and musician, it became clear to Brock that studio furniture had become stuck in the 60's and 70's - ugly and utilitarian to excess, the standard pressboard self-assembled furniture available was not recognizing the unique needs nor aesthetic discernment of the industry.
Some time ago they had been invited to build a Eurorack case and have decided to continue building them ever since."

12U 104HP wide custom case for Damian Taylor
Recently they designed and built a double wide 12U 104hp modular case for Grammy-nominated producer Damian Taylor (Bjork, The Killers, Unkle, Arcade Fire, The Prodigy).
It houses four Doepfer PSU2’s and 8 Bus Boards, has two IEC power connectors on the rear and even a matching rear panel to compliment his studio space.
They included 1/4” connectors on the rear with passthroughs to the front of the case.
See the building-process HERE, and the finished product with modules installed HERE

I really like this sort of craftsmanship, that's why I think it is worth posting it here.
If you are looking for a new case or rack, contact them to find out what they can do for you.
They mention worldwide shipping on their website...
Based on the pictures they seem to make good quality products with an eye for detail.
Watch their site as they will be adding some very funky cool cases in the very near future.
Loads of drawings are already just waiting to be pumped into their CNC machine...

Also check out their impressive portfolio at http://www.2egress.com/portfolio.html

Doepfer A-166-2 Logic Module Announced

Via the Doepfer A-100 Usergroup on Yahoo we found out today that Dieter and his crew are working on an additional logic module (A-166-2).

Not the new, but the 'old'
A-166 Dual Logic Module
You probably remember the original A-166 Dual Logic Module, which is a double logic device that combines digital control / clock signals.
Read all about that module HERE.
A typical application of this module is the combination of digital signals of the A-100 gates, clocks and triggers to obtain "gated" clocks or rhythmic clock patterns.

The new A-166-2 "...will also include - among other functions - a flipflop.
( The output will turn high as soon as the first pulse of the "gate stream at audio rate" appears and stay high until the gate turns low.)
Sometimes I'd like to have a flipflop function in certain patches.
A simple zero-crossing comparator could be added to this module too.
The A-166-2 will probably also include a rising edge detector (outputs a short pulse at the rising edge of a digital input signal) and a falling edge detector (outputs a short pulse at the falling edge of a digital input signal).
I think also about a pitch-change-detector (or more general CV-change-detector).
It outputs a signal whenever a CV connected to it's input changes (probably with three outputs: positive/negative/both).

So far there is no front panel layout available as I'm still fiddling about the arrangement of the sockets and controls, which features will be finally included and which front panel width (4/6/8 HP) is the best compromise."

Price and availability are still unknown...

Doepfer History: MVP1 MIDI Volume Pedal

The Doepfer MVP1 MIDI Volume Pedal was manufactured from 1991 until 1994 and was available as a kit, ready built pc board or complete pedal unit (i.e. built into a foot controller).

Doepfer MVP1 with external box and
the (Dutch) Elektuur Magazine of July 1994
The MVP1 was a programmable unit that could be used as volume (factory setting) or expression-pedal.
It featured MIDI In and Out so it could be placed between your keyboard and a sound module.

Via a learn button and internal DIPswitches you could change this module's functions.
Other parameters that could be controlled with this unit were volume, modulation, portamento, aftertouch, pitchbend, and velocity.

The MVP1 was also published as a DIY article in the July 1994 issue of electronic magazine ELEKTOR which was published in different languages (German, French, English, Dutch).

MVP1 DIY-kit
Elektor is a monthly magazine about all aspects of electronics, first published as "Elektuur" in the Netherlands in 1960, and was published worldwide in many languages including English, German, French, Greek, Spanish, Swedish, Portuguese (native and Brazilian) and Italian with distribution in over 50 countries.
The English language edition of Elektor was launched in 1975 and is read worldwide.

The advantage of Doepfer's original MVP1 board was that the board was so small that it could be mounted inside the pedal.
ELEKTOR modified Doepfer's original MVP1 pc board design a little bit because they did not like that a smaller circuit was located directly under the processor to keep the pcb board dimensions as small as possible, but the electronic circuits are exactly the same.

MVP1 pedal with internal electrnics
The ELEKTOR version of the pc board was much larger and that's why an external box was necessary (as seen in the top picture).

The last MVP1 units were sold somewhere between 1995 and 1996.

The kit costed between 40 Euros (PCB only) and 70 Euros (PCB and foot controller)
The ready built unit was available for 110 Euros.
Around 600 units were manufactured.

The user manual is still available on the Doepfer website HERE

Doepfer A-100LC3 Low-Cost Case Announced

Quite fast after they released their A-100BP case, Doepfer has now announced another new case to house your eurorack modules.
This time it is a low-cost case that will probably be available from the end of 2013.

Doepfer A-100LC3 low-cost case front view
The A-100LC3 is the "small brother" of the low cost case A-100LC6 (and A-100LC9).
It is very similar to the A-100LC6 but offers only one row with 84 HP for installation of modules.
The A-100LC3 is equipped with one power supply (1200mA) and one bus board.

Because of the limited space the power supply of the DIY-Kit #1 with an external transformer is used (same as for the DIY-Kit #1).

Doepfer A-100LC3 low-cost case
On the left side of the case the connector for the external transformer is located.
The external transformer is not shown in the above pictures.
The outside dimensions in mm are about 445 (width) x 160 (depth) x 150 (height).

The price of the A-100LC3 will be around Euro 180-200 (including external power supply for 230 or 115V AC, without modules).

One of the benefits of having the connector on the side of the module IMO is that it can also be used on its back, as some kind of (high) skiff, but I wouldn't look up strange if Doepfer soon announces a skiff or another case...

Intellijel Metropolis Preliminary Info

One of the most interesting modules i have seen in a while has been sent out to various testers in the last few weeks.

The original:
RYK M-185 Sequencer
The Intellijel Metropolis is a 'complex multi stage pitch and gate Eurorack sequencer', based on the RYK M-185 sequencer from the early Roland M-100 series.
This RYK module has always intrigued me, and i was always hoping someone would bring this style of sequencing/programming to the Eurorack.
(Watch some of the original RYK M-185 demos HERE and HERE)

Intellijel worked out an agreement with RYK earlier this year to create this only official Eurorack adaptation of his brilliant sequencer design.
It has taken many months to procure all the special parts and the design has already gone through several hardware revisions.

Looking at the prototype picture that i see floating all over the internet, i see it has a quite lot of extra features.
It's a big, space-consuming module (34HP wide) and it looks very impressive with its rows of sliders for pitch and pulse count, the switches for different gate modes, and buttons for slide on/off and skip step.
All the core original M-185 functions seem to be there...(Read more here)
On the left side of the module is a 5 digit LED screen, buttons for complex programming/editing and a few knobs for AUX-levels, Gate- and Slide-time plus one for data input.

Intellijel Metropolis Sequencer
Some of the features :
-Sequencer modes:
Forward, Forward-fixed, Reverse, Reverse-fixed, PingPong, PingPong-Fixed, Random, Random-fixed, Brownian, Brownian-fixed
-TB-303 style slide (constant time portamento) with adjustable time
-Stage skipping (double click slide buttons)
- Internal quantizing with selectable scales and keys
-Can act as a master clk with BPM control or slave to an external (using clk src function)
-Save/load panel settings
-shuffle
-Internal clock divider
-Sync output (sets output pulse on last clock step of a sequence, used to slave other sequencers via reset)
-Two assignable AUX inputs which can control: gate length, transpose, key shift, root shift, sequence length, and step divisor.
-config menu to set slider pitch range, clock div type, clock offset
-tap tempo when in internal clock mode and tempo lock with bpm detect in external mode.

-All menu actions are one level deep. i.e. press the menu button and spin the encoder.
There are no hidden levels or sub menus.

Video: Metropolis Scrutineering by Dudadius
Metropolis Scrutineering from dudadius on Vimeo.
" First go around with the Intelljel Metropolis. This is a pretty basic setup; I didn't get into using the aux inputs to modulate things within the Metropolis. I'll try that next! As you can see though, the Metropolis really lends itself to performing and improvising. Very hands-on and easy to go all sorts of crazy ways, melodically. Similar to the Rene, in that regard, but from a totally different point-of-view.Patch notes. Pamela is sending clock to Metropolis, Trigger Riot, Modcan Dual Delay, and Sound of Shadows.
Metropolis is sending the same note info to three different oscillators. The third one going through a uScale first to create intervals. All going into the Dubmix. The Trigger Riot is controlling Tiptop drums, mixed through a VCA Matrix then an M277 for a little grit. That's into channel 2 on the Dubmix, where I add a little Spring Reverb at one point.
The kick and snare are ultimately doubled with the Cwejman BLD and DPO. Lastly, I dialed into some sustained notes on the Pressure Points and a Modcan Triple OSC. The uStep is advancing the Pressure Points.
I had some troubles with the Trigger Riot losing sync when I would change presets.
I'll have to delve into that some more."

Random Video: Modular Synth - A-143-4 and A-149-1 Orchestral(ish) Sounds by IsVisible

Here's the latest modular synth video by IsVisible.
It's kind of orchestral-ish and features Doepfer's A-143-4 and A-149-1 modules.

Video: Modular Synth - A-143-4 and A-149-1 - Orchestral(ish) Sounds
Modular Synth - A-143-4 and A-149-1 - Orchestral(ish) Sounds from isvisible on Vimeo.

" Here we have the Doepfer A-143-4 Quad VC/LFO/VCO triggering the A-149-1 Random Voltages. The A-143-4 is also triggering the A-143-2 Quad ADSR along with providing a little cv to the A-110 VCO's.
All in all with a little filtering courtesy of the A-106-1 Xtreme Filter (Korg MS-20 inspired) and the A-124 Wasp (erm... a Wasp clone) it sounds a bit orchestral, in an abstract kinda way anyway.
Both line outs from the modular (bassier / brassier low end and plucked / reedish higher end) are going directly into a lovely old Tapco 4400 Dual Reverberation System then to my mixing desk where the audio is taken from."

Quick Tip: Differences in Eurorack Modules

When you have multiple modules of the same brand and type , you might sometimes experience small differences between those Eurorack modules.
Sometimes oscillators are tuned differently and you can't get them to match.
One may sound lower than the other with each's controls identical, yet they sound different..
This is often not something to worry about.

Four A-110 VCOs that look the same,
all sounding (slightly) different.
Although most modules are thoroughly tested, some batches may indeed sound a little different due to (internal) trim-pot settings, differences due to tolerances of the electronic parts, etc...

If you want to compare your modules, it is always smart to check the production date/ batch number on the test label and/or on the PCB (version nr) first.
Usually this can be found at the inner side of the front panel.

If the numbers match, and one of your modules does sound different than the other one, you might check out the trimming pots on the backside of the module on the PCB.
In most cases this can be easily fixed with a small screwdriver once you located the right potentiometer (often printed on the PCB or can be found in a manual).

Sometimes it just has to do with other components.
During the production-years of a module the values of all kinds of parts of your module may have been changed a bit (for example R77, R86, R88).
These differences can sometimes be audible, sometimes only to the trained ear...

Especially the specifications of a main circuit like the 74HC4046 (Used in the Phase Locked Loop - A-196 PLL module) may differ for different manufacturers (even different batches from the same manufacturer) of this circuit.
Because the PLL module is not a precision module like a VCO there are no trimming potentiometers available to balance such tolerances.
You'll just have to live with that...

Creating Two Sequences With One Doepfer A-160 by Frederic Gerchambeau

The latest video from Frederic Gerchambeau features quite an interesting pattern, generated by two different sequences from a single A-160 Trigger Sequencer module.

Video: Creating two sequences with one Doepfer A-160

" With only one Doepfer A-160, it's possible to get two different sequences at the same time. For even more fun, i have used two LFOs to trigger that A-160.
Basically the patch is that one :
Two lfos > multiple > A-160 Trig in
A-160 outputs (x 6) > 3 into mixer 1 and 3 into mixer 2
Output mixer1 > VCO1 and output mixer2 > VCO2
Outputs VCO 1 and 2 > VCA"

MusicThing Modular Spring Reverb by Tom Whitwell

MusicThing Spring Reverb
Module
Tom Whitwell, known to many as the man behind the MusicThing blog, his Turing Machine- project (plus expanders) and various other syth-related projects, has cooked up something new again.

His latest Voltage Controlled Spring Reverb module is a eurorack spring reverb module that has a circuit that is inspired by a few other synth designers.
The end result is a spring reverb module with a few interesting extras...
For example, this design features a voltage controlled vactrol crossfader that you can also use independently.

In the following videos Tom shows us what the module can do.

Video 1: Music Thing Modular Spring Reverb

" Spring reverb module for Eurorack modular synths. Audio is slightly out of sync with video, sorry. Full details below...
Controls: Top knob is reverb level.
Right hand smaller knob is Tilt, a simple hifi-style tone control that changes the colour of the reverb.
Left hand smaller knob is Control, an attenuverter control for the incoming CV. 12 o'clock = no CV, clockwise = increasing CV, anticlockwise = inverted CV.
Patch: DPO sine waves sequenced by Turing Machine and Wogglebug. Gated through QMMG, envelopes from Maths. The CV input makes 80s-style gated reverb and pseudo-reverse reverb possible.
For this demo, using a 9EB2C1B full sized reverb tank. "

Video 2: Music Thing Modular Spring Reverb Crossfade Mode

" The MTM Spring Reverb contains a vactrol crossfader that you can also use independently. Here, it is crossfading between the DPO Final and Square outputs.
The module can be built with either a Silonex or a VTL5C3 vactrol. The VTL5C3 sounds smoother for this use, with a slower response that can be 'pinged'.
Video and audio are slightly out of sync, sorry. "

This is again an open hardware project – all the project files (Eagle CAD projects, Gerbers PCB files, a Mouser BOM and Illustrator/PDF front panel designs) will be available soon on his web-page, covered by a Creative Commons Attribution Share-a-like license, which allows for commercial use.

Update 26/10: Documentation and schematics now available via http://musicthing.co.uk/modular/?page_id=579

If you want to find out more about this module check out the Spring Reverb Research Notes for the background story or listen to the Spring Reverb Audio Demos and don't forget to follow Tom on Twitter for future updates.

New Doepfer A-100 Case A-100PB Announced

New A-100PB case without cover
Following the success of the larger Doepfer monster base cases, they announced today that probably from December 2013 the "small brother" of the monster base A-100PMB will be available.

The new case A-100PB is very similar to the A-100PMB but has only half the width (2 x 84 HP for installation of modules).
You could say that this is the flightcased version of the basic wooden A-100LCB case...
The suitcase versions A-100P6 or A-100P9 can be positioned on top of the A-100PB because the width of the A-100PB is a bit more than the width of A-100P6/P9 and the footprint of the A-100PB is adapted to the depth of A-100P6/P9.
The A-100PB is equipped with one power supply (1200mA) and two bus boards.

New A-100PB case closed
The bus boards are located in the rear area (even those for the modules that are mounted in the front row). This was necessary to take advantage of the full height of the front area for installation of A-100 modules.
The max. depth for modules in the front row is ~70 mm.

A cable lenght of 20 cm for modules in the front row is still sufficient as the bus board is close to these modules (just behind the area required for the modules, same bus board position as for A-100PMB or A-100LCB).
The price of the A-100PB will be about Euro 550 (without modules).

SiteTip: TrueGrid by ModularGrid

To celebrate the first anniversary of ModularGrid, they introduced the beta of TrueGrid a few days ago.

TrueGrid is a fully functional true modular web synthesizer which let's you create, listen and share modular synth patches.
It consists of 10 Eurorack modules and some patch-cables, that you can rewire, turn knobs and move around the same way as a real modular synth... plus there's a way to save your patches (and load other people's creations)
Basically they added audio engines behind some of the modules from ModularGrid's huge ("1300 to go") database.
It is really fun to play with, although not all functions are working (yet).

Update 19/10: The new Tape Recorder lets you record your patch and export it to .wav file
It also replaces the Outs module as endpoint.

Update 24/10: TrueGrid now supports MIDI, more info at

You can find TrueGrid at http://modulargrid.net/racks/synth/

At this time TrueGrid will satisfactorily run in Google Chrome only.
Support for other browsers will follow... (also iOS)

More Paper Circuit Control by Frederic Gerchambeau

Since the last time that i posted about Frederic Gerchambeau's paper circuit experiments he has already posted a few more videos further developing of this concept to his GruithuisenCityMan YouTube account.

In these videos he shows how a paper circuit, a simple sheet of paper with a conductive/capacitive substance, can be integrated into a modular system.

I will not publish all his videos here (you can always subscribe to his channel), but this one was interesting enough to share here...

Video: Wandering (paper circuit as a ribbon controller) by Frederic Gerchambeau

" Hello ! My name is Frederic Gerchambeau.
I have made this movie and this music. The music has been made using a parper circuit and a Doepfer analog modular system.
The paper circuit has four outputs. One leads to the cutoff frequency of lowpass filter 1, another leads to the cutoff frequency of lowpass filter 2, a third one leads to the pitch CV control oscillator 1 and a fourth one leads to the pitch CV control oscillator 2. So, with a wire coming from a Doepfer A-183-2 offset, i can control these four parameters depending where the wire is on the paper circuit. The echo effect comes from a Make Noise Echophon. Enjoy !

Doepfer A-106-5 Demo by Icaro Ferre

This one popped up on Vimeo a few weeks ago.

In a short video Icaro Ferre shows what the A-106-5 12db multimode SEM Filter module can do in multiple modes, and with different resonance settings...

Video: Doepfer A-106-5 Demo by Icaro Ferre
Doepfer A-106-5 Demo from Icaro Ferre on Vimeo.

" Running a sequence through the Doepfer A-106-5 SEM Filter module."

Uploaded by Icaro Ferre

I have this module too, and I like it a lot.
The only thing i miss in this filter module is an extra CV input to control the resonance, just like the A-121 Multimode Filter or the other Oberheim filter, the A-122 24 dB Lowpass filter VCF3 have.
