Modular Synth - An All Doepfer Orchestral(ish) Patch by IsVisible

IsVisible uploaded an interesting new video to YouTube... enjoy!

Video: Modular Synth - An All Doepfer Orchestral (ish) Patch

" Here's a patch I filmed about two years ago. Made with all Doepfer modules.
Some patch notes:
The A-143-4 Quad VCLFO/VCO is triggering the gate/envelopes of the A-143-2 Quad ADSR, clocking the random voltages from the A-149-1, providing cv for the two filters (A-106-1 Xtreme and A124 Wasp)
The A-143-4 is in turn being modulated by two LFO's, A-143-9 and A-146.
The two voices are then passed through a channel each of a Tapco 4400 Dual Spring Reverb.

Random Video: Epoch Modular 'Benjolin' with Doepfer A-143-9 and A-135-1 by isvisible

Another nice Eurorack video by isvisible popped up on Vimeo today:

Video: Epoch Modular 'Benjolin' with Doepfer A-143-9 and A-135-1
Epoch Modular 'Benjolin' with Doepfer A-143-9 and A-135-1 from isvisible on Vimeo.
" I wanted to make a video showing off the many facets of the Benjolin, but got carried away with it and only covered a little bit.
There were only three modules used... an Epoch Modular version of the Benjolin (originally designed by Rob Hordijk), and two Doepfer modules, an A-143-9 Quadrature LFO which is modulating the VCA's in the A-135-1 Quad VCA / VC Mixer.
The A-143-9 is in turn being modulated by the Rungler out on the Benjolin.

Four audio channels were taken from the Benjolin and into the Quad VCA.
1 - LPF.
2 - XOR.
3 - HPF
4 - PWM
There was slight panning of the four channels in my mixer (Output 1 slight left, to output 4 slight right) then recorded with no external effects or any additional modulation."

Doepfer A-143-9 Voltage Controlled Quad LFO/VCO Video Tutorials by Raul Pena

Raul Pena is already going into his third year of tutorial-making and today was the kickoff off a brand new Doepfer tutorial series.
Today he started a series on the Doepfer A-143-9 Voltage Controlled Quadrature LFO/VCO.

Video 1: Doepfer A-143-9 Quadrature LFO Basics

"A brief overview of the features and function of the Doepfer A143-9 Quadrature LFO. Sound and Video by Raul Pena. "

Video 2: Doepfer A143-9 Quadrature LFO Audio Demonstration Part One

" A brief audio demonstration of the Doepfer A143-9 Quadrature LFO. Sine outputs at different phase settings are compared. Sound and Video by Raul Pena."

Video 3: Doepfer A143-9 Quadrature LFO Audio demonstration Part Two

"The second of two audio demonstrations using the Doepfer A143-9 Quadrature LFO. In this segment we use the 4 outputs of the A143-9 to modulate the 4 inputs of the Doepfer A135-1 Quad VCA,VC mixer. Includes a short demo of how to use an offset to slow the A143-9 rate is shown. Sound and Video by Raul Pena."

New videos in this series will be added to this post weekly on Thursdays.

Raul also created a couple of surveys to help improve his videos,

A-143-2 Quad ADSR - Power to the Quads!

Good value-for-money and serious rackspace-savers are Doepfer's Quad modules.
These modules offer four (-duh-) identical but individual modulation sources in one module.

My A-143-2 Quad ADSR is at the heart of my A-100 system.
With 4 envelope generators in one this is a very powerful module, and this is where the 3 individual gate outputs from my MAQ 16/3 come together.
Also see THIS post.

The Gate inputs of the units 2, 3 and 4 are normalled to the Gate input of unit 1, so Gate input 1 is connected to the switching contacts of the Gate input sockets fom submodule 2, 3 and 4 if no other input is connected.
With only one Gate signal applied to Gate input 1, it can be used to trigger all four sub-modules simultaneously.
A switch for each individual channel is available for switching between high, low and medium ranges.

All 4 sub-units have additional input sockets for Re-Trigger, but the re-trigger behaviour of the A-143-2 is slightly different compared to other envelope generators;
During the attack phase the envelope cannot be re-triggered or reset. (unlike the A-140 ADSR envelope, that envelope can be re-triggered while the gate is still open).

Each sub-unit also has three digital outputs (high/low) that sends a trigger signal at the End of Attack (EOA), End of Decay (EOD) and End of Release (EOR).
This is very useful if you want to daisy-chain the sub-modules to create more complex envelopes. (or even complete loops)
The envelope outputs are displayed with LEDs and the maximal envelope voltage (Attack/Decay reversal point) is about +8V.

The Quad series consists of the following Multiple modulation sources so far;
A-143-1 Quad AD, A-143-2 Quad ADSR
A-143-3 Quad LFO
A-143-4
Quad VCLFO/VCO
 (just released), A-143-9
VC Quadratu
re LFO and modules A-142-4 Quad Decay, plus Quad Amplifiers A-132-2 Quad VCA I and A-132-4Quad exp. VCA

Never Enough VCO's

The engines or hearts of all modular synthesizers are definetely the VCO's. As main sound source for your patches it seems you never have enough of them.

I own 5 VCO's at the moment, One A-111 High End VCO plus four A-110 Standard VCO's. Ideal for stacking layers of waveforms to make extra- fat sounds, and also very useable for multiple A-100 melodylines

The A-111 is the one i use most because of its extended possibilities.
This VCO has an extended frequency range, improved waveforms, FM and Soft Sync inputs plus an extra fine-tune-controller. Ideal for controllerfreaks like me.
It produces sine, triangle, pulse and sawtooth waveforms, which are all derived from the triangle oscillator, what does make it hard to produce perfect sine-waves ( but a little better as the A-110's sine wave )
One of the best things is that all 4 waveforms are all simultanously available at the outputs for your mixing pleasure.

The much cheaper A-110  has less controls and is based on a sawtooth oscillator. All outcoming waveforms of this module are derived from this sawtooth by internal waveform converters. This module also generates sinewaves that are not completely perfect, but to 'normal' ears this is hardly audible

I never noticed, and i guess most of us don't care and never noticed the imperfect-ness of the sinewaves of both modules.
Even on an oscilloscope it is hardly visible that the sinewaves are nothing more than rounded sawtooth-waves.
For a perfect sine wave Doepfer recommends the A-143-9 Quadrature LFO/VCO, another interesting module, that i will highlight in a future blogpost.

Note: As the special circuit CEM3340 used in the A-111 High End VCO module is no longer available the module has to be discontinued. Sales at Doepfer while stocks last !
