Doepfer A-160-2 Clock Divider II Announced

Doepfer announced a few new modules modules this week.
Starting with this one:

The A-160-2 Clock Divider II is an enhanced version of the standard clock divider A-160.
The 4HP wide module is a frequency divider for clock/trigger/gate signals, designed to be a source of lower frequencies, particularly for rhythm uses.

The Clock input will take any digital signal from, eg., an LFO, MIDI sync, or the gate from a MIDI-CV interface.
At the outputs, you have access to three sets of seven different sub-divided clock signals, from half
the clock frequency down to 1/128.
The low/high levels of the output signals are 0V and about +10V.
The A-160-2 also has a reset input. Whenever a reset signal is sensed, all outputs are set to certain levels which depend upon the selected mode.

These are the most important features of the module:

- Three different sets of dividing factors, selected by a three-position switch at the front panel: power of two: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128
prime numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17
integer: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
- Two output modes, selected by a two-position switch at the front panel:
- Gate mode: outputs act like the outputs of typical binary dividers
- Trigger mode: in this mode the outputs are AND-wired with the clock signal (i.e. the clock pulsewidth affects the pulsewidth of the outputs)
- Clock edge type selected by a jumper on the pc board:
positive: the rising edge of the clock signal triggers the state change of the outputs
negative: the falling edge of the clock signal triggers the state change of the outputs
- Reset behaviour by two jumpers on the pc board:
level triggered: the level at the Reset input triggers the Reset
edge triggered: the edge of the signal at the Reset input triggers the Reset
positive: a high level (> 2.5V) or the rising edge at the Reset input triggers the Reset
negative: a low level (< 1 V) or the falling edge at the Reset input triggers the Reset
- Output polarity selected by a jumper on the pc board:
positive: non-inverted outputs
negative: all seven outputs are inverted


The module is planned for early 2015, price ~ Euro 100.00

Update Nov 27th 2014:
" we also think about a A-161-2 which is independent from the A-160 (i.e. own clock and reset). Details are not yet available, except one thing: switchable between gate and trigger mode, in trigger mode the outputs are "gated" with the incoming clock signal. 
And we are working also on a clock multiplier module (A-160-3 ?). 
But the release dates, prices and detailed features for these new modules are not yet available."

Hinton Instruments Gearbox

Hinton Instruments was quite an unknown name for me up until now, but they have been releasing a few highly interesting modules lately.
The Gearbox is one of them.

This module was developed in response to a request on the Muffwiggler forum.

The Gearbox is a compact module that converts and locks analogue, MIDI and DINSync timing clocks together.
Any one source may be master and the other two follow in synchronisation.

The Gearbox module is available in two versions: a basic 8HP module with a single 5-pin DIN socket that may be used as one input or output or a full version with manual transport control switches and a separate 6HP panel containing four DIN I/O connectors.

Main Features:
- Four analogue inputs: Clock, Pause, Start and Stop
- Five analogue clock pulse outputs, 5V or 10V levels set by links:
- Reset, ÷6, ÷8, ÷12, ÷24 clocks
- Manual illuminated switches: Start and Stop/Cont
- MIDI In and Out
- DIN-Sync In and Out
- 8HP width with mini-jack (EJ), Banana 4mm (EB) or Bantam/TT 4.4mm (ET) jacks
- 120mm deep.
- 6HP width panel for DIN connectors, may be placed away from main panel.

Any analogue signals may be used as inputs enabling slow rising waveforms to be used as jitter free controls.
MIDI and DINSync sequencers and drum machines and DAWs may be controlled by analogue signals and vice versa.
Analogue sequencers may be driven by MIDI or DINSync clocks and commands.

Because all timing is divided down rather than multiplied up there is no sloppy timing with tempo changes.

Gezeiten Modular Ultima Ratio TYP1 Cascading Clock

Another newcomer in the Eurorack-scene is Gezeiten Modular, a Berlin based manufacturer of Eurorack compatible Synthesizer Modules. (Gezeiten means Tides in German)
The Ultima Ratio Cascading Clock is the first product they recently released in a small series.

The Gezeiten Ultima Ratio is an 8HP wide intuitive playable Clock Divider, Clock Generator and Dual AR Envelope.

You can use it
- to synchronize sequencers with independent time signatures
- as an performance like instrument when you play the divider ratios
- to provide and distribute a stable system clock
- to fire envelopes in a live performance to rhythmically control filters or VCAs in musically meaningful ratios
- to mult triggers

"Playing along with my eurorack modular synthesizer and testing the Gezeiten Ultima Ratio clock divider module.
The track is entirely made with the modular with just the inevitable addition of reverb :)
The Ultima Ratio is used to provide 3 clock streams to synchronize the Grids drum sequencer and both Moskwa sequencers with different clock resolutions.
I play with the clock ratios in realtime and also make use of the makro attack/release envelope generator to provide control voltage to modulate the cutoff frequency of a dual Korgasmatron filter.

Doepfer A-190-8 Midi/USB to Sync Interface Now Available

At the end of the year, Doepfer finally announced that the A-190-8 Midi/USB to Sync Interface is available starting today.

Basically this module divides the incoming MIDI or USB clock messages into smaller steps.
You could look at the A-190-8 as a modular version of the MSY2 MIDI-to-SYNC Converter.
It was already announced in December last year, and besides the normal MSY2 functions this module also features multiple simultaneous outputs and added USB support.

Here are the most important features of this version of the module:
- Midi input (recognizes only Midi realtime messages clock, start, stop and continue)

- USB input for Midi via USB

-Clock outputs:
96: outputs the Midi clock 1:1 (96 pulses per measure/ppm or 24 pulses per quarter note/ppq)
32: outputs the Midi clock divided by 3 (32 pulses per measure/ppm or 8 pulses per quarter note/ppq)
16: outputs the Midi clock divided by 6 (16 pulses per measure/ppm or 4 pulses per quarter note/ppq)
8: outputs the Midi clock divided by 12 (8 pulses per measure/ppm or 2 pulses per quarter note/ppq)
1: outputs a pulse at the start of each measure

- Other outputs:
Start: outputs a pulse at each Midi Start or Continue message or generates a gate signal that remains in the high state until a Midi Stop message occurs (selectable via jumper)
Stop: outputs a pulse at each Midi Stop message
Reset: outputs a pulse at each Midi Start message that follows a Midi Stop message

- Wait control input, can be selected by means of a jumper between Gate function or Switch function: in - Gate mode the positive edge of a gate signal is used to init the Wait state, in Switch mode an external switch that connects to GND is used to init the Wait state (equivalent to Switch-Trigger)

- Wait button / Wait control input: Whenever the Wait button is operated or a positive voltage is applied to the Wait input the module waits for the next measure start until the clock signals are generated.

- LED displays for clock, "1" and start (display of Start depends upon the chosen Start mode, see above)
output voltages can be selected between +5V and +12V by means of an internal jumper (for DIN Sync applications +5V has to be used !)
firmware updates via USB (provided that there will be updates available)

New Doepfer Announcements

Doepfer released preliminary information about two new modules.

The A-190-8 is a MIDI/USB to Sync interface.
Basically this module divides the incoming MIDI or USB clock messages into smaller steps.
You could see it as a modular version of the MSY2 MIDI-to-SYNC Converter that was announced in December last year, but with multiple simultaneous outputs and added USB support.
Funny that i already posted my idea for a module like this in late 2010 (Read that blogpost HERE)

A-190-8 Prototype 1
The main application of the module is the control of clocked A-100 modules like sequencers, sequencer controllers, trigger divider, trigger sequencer and similar units, but also to trigger/reset LFO's, envelope generators and more.

The A-190-8 will have 10 available outputs which are not yet fixed. 
Preliminary info can be found HERE, and if the users think other combinations of clocks or start/stop/reset outputs would be better, Doepfer can change that because the outputs are generated by the firmware of the processor.

Read some of the user suggestions at the Doepfer Yahoo Usergroup.

Doepfer left out the usual DIN SYNC socket because to create that you only need clock and start/stop on two pins of the DIN socket. 
If there are sufficient inquiries Doepfer may offer a special cable with two 3.5 jack plugs on one side and a DIN plug on the other. 
(For example to synchronize a TB-303)

A-180 Multiples and

For early in 2013 also a slim version of the A-180 Multiples module is planned.
This will be called A-180-2 and will be half the size of a regular A-180.
Because of the only 2 HP width nuts cannot be used to mount the pc board by means of the socket nuts at the front panel. 
Instead of that the PC board is mounted by screws and spacers at the front panel.(pic)

Personally i don't think i want one of those in my system because of how a nut-less module looks, but i can imagine there are people who applaud space-saving modules like this.

There were also a few other announcements/updates:
In December the A-192-2 (Dual CV/Gate-to-USB/Midi interface) will be available and even the hardware of the Polyphonic CV/Gate interface A-190-5 is ready.
"Christian (Assall) is about to program the firmware. But it takes longer than expected  and so the A-190-5 will be available early in 2013."

Quick Tip IX : A-119 As a Clock Generator

A quick tip that i 'borrowed' from the Yahoo Doepfer A-100 User Group is this next one:

It could happen that you run out of MIDI or other signal-converters to synchronize your A-100 system.
If you have a free channel out on your soundcard you can use the A-119 Ext. Input / Envelope Follower to produce some kind of clock signal as an alternative.

To do this you should create a channel in your favorite sequencer/ sampler/ sound-card that sends out 16th notes of some short sounds like a rim-shot, snare,claves or woodblock for example.
The A-119 can simply turn this audio-signal into a (steady) gate signal, which can be multiplied/divided and used throughout your A-100 system.

Most Wanted Update - MSY2 Module for A-100 System

Great news...

It looks like the idea that i posted in December 2010 for some kind of extended version of an MSY2 module for the A-100 wasn't that bad.

In the Yahoo Doepfer A-100 Usergroup Dieter Doepfer recently announced that they "...are working on a modular version of the MSY2 with some additional features ( USB interface, several outputs with different clock dividing factors and polarity and some more )."

The MSY2 MIDI-to-SYNC/Clock Interface can be used to convert Midi clock into analog clock signals.

There is no release date or price available so far.

A-166 Dual Logic Module

" A Logic Gate is an idealized or physical device implementing a Boolean function.
It performs a logical operation on one or more logic inputs and produces a single logic output. Logic gates are primarily implemented using diodes or transistors acting as electronic switches. "

The A-166 Dual Logic Module is a double logic device that combines digital control / clock signals.
A typical application of this module is the combination of digital signals of the A-100 gates, clocks and triggers to obtain "gated" clocks or rhythmic clock patterns.

It contains 2 identical units with 3 inputs for each unit.
The logical states of the inputs ("1" = high / "0" = low) are linked together in 3 ways: AND, OR, EXOR (exclusive OR).
The input sockets of each triple unit are "normalized", i.e. the switched contact of socket 2 is connected to input 1 and the switched contact of socket 3 is connected to input 2.
The three functions are available simultaneously at three outputs with LED display of the output states.

Additionally two separate inverters ( like the A-165  ) are available that are very useful.
These can even be used to invert a signal before it is fed into one of the two logical units.
All other outputs can be fed back to the module's inputs also... in that way you can create very nice and very complex rhythmic triggers.

Best Friends Forever V

The Best Friends Forever section on this blog is a selection of modules that always stay connected, even when i create new patches.

This combination is not much different from my earlier BFF posts, only thing is that here the modules are already connected internally, and not externally with patch-cords.

The two modules, A-160 Clock Divider and A-161 Clock Sequencer are unmissable for rhythmic purposes and for syncing with MIDI or a ( voltage controlled ) LFO.

The Divider is syncronized via the Trigger and Reset Inputs, this module divides the frequencies in steps from /2, /4, /8, /16, /32 and /64, resulting in very usable trigger signals.

The synced Clock Sequencer is a very simple sequencer with 8 steps, the speed of the steps is controlled by the input of the Divider. In fact this combination of modules is an impressive sequencer on it's own.

The outputs of both modules can be used to control any clock, trigger or gate input.
For example, you can use them to trigger envelope generators, resets and (voltage controlled) switches.
It is also possible to use the A-161's trigger outputs to reset the A-160, check out the video below for the basic functions of these modules.
